Mary grew up in Collingswood, Camden County, NJ, and graduated from Collingswood HS in 1943. She graduated from Peirce Business College in 1945, and work briefly for RCA Victor and the Campbell Soup companies before she married in 1947. After her marriage she was mostly content to be a housewife, raising her children, and keeping the accounts for her husband's dentistry practice. She did dabble in some home-based sales businesses from time to time.

Her interests were varied, including oil painting, writing and publishing poetry, gardening and bridge clubs, playing golf, and in later years, wood carving. One of her accomplishments was winning the logo design competition for West Deptford Township, Gloucester County, NJ.
