CULLMAN-Funeral services for Harry Sheppard Welch, a longtime native of Birmingham, will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at Johns-Ridouts Funeral Home in Birmingham-Southside, with burial in Elmwood Cemeteery.

Johns-Ridouts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Welch died Friday, April 8, 2011, in Cullman. He was born Aug. 31, 1926 in Eclectic, AL to Henry Sheppard and Jessie Chrietzberg Welch. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy on the aircraft carrier USS Montgomery in the Pacific Theatre. He worked for US Steel, Barber's Milk and finally for the Hoover School System. He was a Mason at the Hoover Masonic Lodge. He was a member of Avondale United Methodist Church for over 40 years. Mr. Welch was married to Opal Terrell Welch for 55 years. He was an exceptional husband, father and grandfather and was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. He moved on to be with the Lord. He was preceded in death by his wife; and his son, Larry Wayne Welch.

Survivors include his sister, Claire W. Klumpp of Fairhope, AL; 2 sons, Scott (Julie) Welch of Cullman, Bruce (Nancy) Welch of Eva; grandchildren, Courtney (Ben) Miller of Birmingham, John (Layne) Welch, Joe Welch, Jessica (Paul) Nicholson, Sydney Welch, all of Cullman, Sarah (Andrew) Portis of Nebraska, Daniel Welch of Tuscaloosa and Joshua (Bethany) Welch of Cullman; 6 great-grandchildren, Kaileb Welch, Jackson Welch, Haley Miller, Michael Nicholson, Charles Miller and Savannah Welch.
