During a Vietnam anti-war protest rally at Kent State University on May 4, 1970, four students were shot and killed by the Ohio National Guard. Erected in 1999, the memorial marks the spot of the incident with the names of students Sandy Scheuer, Bill Schroeder, Jeff Miller and Allison Krause engraved on triangular marble plaques in each corner surrounded by six concrete light posts.
