Garnett was the only child of artists Fred and Frances (Strain) Biesel. The family home was at 5211 Kimbark in Chicago and summers at their cottage on Furnessville Road in Furnessville, Porter Co, IN. He went to a private school in Chicago.

To my understanding, Garnett worked for an airline in Africa, where he supervised a maintenance crew.

He was married on April 26, 1954 to Duane MacDonald in Chicago. He volunteered at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and was one of the founders of Friends of the Lakeshore (now Friends of the Indiana Dunes) in the late 1970's. Garnett and Duane were living in Arlington Heights, IL in 1984 and weekends and summers in Furnessville. They divorced shortly after that.

In 1985, Garnet was contacted by the Smithsonian Institution to donate his parent's scrapbooks, photos, sketchbooks and papers which he did. Soon after that, Garnett suffered an early stroke and he was incapacitated for many years.

Garnett was a religious man, who attended Saint Ann of the Dunes in Beverly Shores, IN. He lived a simple life in Furnessville, the vacation home of his childhood. Garnett had the support of his neighbors and friends from church who helped him live independently after his stroke.

In 1992 a lot of his parent's artwork was stolen from second floor of his house by his goddaughter and her boyfriend.

Garnett became more and more crippled and around 2007, he was forced to move to LaPorte where he died in 2008.

Garnett's ashes were dispersed where he lived in Furnessville, not in the cemetery. That was his request.

There was no local obituary.

The Biesel house was east of the Furnessville cemetery and was removed by the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Park Service a few years ago.

STOLEN ARTWORK WORTH $50,000

A man whose goddaughter and her boyfriend are accused of stealing his $50,000 art collection, said Wednesday he bears no ill will toward her. Garnett Biesel said the collection of hundreds of items includes a variety of paintings, drawings, etchings and lithographs by eight different American artists. Most of the works date from the late 19th century through the 1950s, including some well-known artists. "I've been collecting art all my life," said the 61-year-old collector.

His goddaughter, Tracy A. Sanderson, 27, and John P. Swiderski, 23, both of 206 Arrow Trail, Porter, have been...
