ONE OF THE OLDEST AND MOST ACTIVE MEMBER BAPTIST CHURCH PASSES AWAY

Mrs. Mary Jones Davis, widow of the late Robert Allen Davis and one of the best known of the older residents of Hampton, died yesterday morning at 4:30 o'clock in her home in 246 West Queen street. Mrs. Davis had been in declining health for the past year or more and her death was due to the infirmities of age. Mrs. Davis was 85 years old and was the daughter of the late James Sclater and Mrs. Jennie Hopkins Sclater, being a member of the prominent Sclater family of the peninsula. She was born, reared and spent her life here. Mrs. Davis was a most active member of the Hampton Baptist church, and was much beloved, owing to her many beautiful traits of character.

Surviving Mrs. Davis are one son, S. S. Davis, of Hampton; two sisters, Mrs. Fannie M. Spratley, of Hampton, and Mrs. Alexander C. Garrett, of Newport News, and one half brother, Thomas L. Sclater, of this city. She was the grandmother of Judge C. Vernon Spratley.
