WILLIAM A. WHITE
1876 - 1949
William Alphonso White, Sr.

William was the oldest child of Lucius and Lula White, who were American citizens living in Brazil, at the time of his birth.

William married Sarah Katherine "Kate" Smith on Valentine's Day 1899 in Evergreen, Texas, in San Jacinto County. At first, they lived in Oakhurst where Kate taught school, but soon moved to Cleveland, where William was a businessman and became postmaster, and where they raised eight children: Fonso, Luke, Bob, Doug, Walton, Katherine, Elizabeth and Neil.

My dad told me that his dad had learned Portugese from the servants as a small boy in Brazil and that even after 60 years of living in Texas, he still had just the slightest of accents, not so much that it made him sound foreign, but just enough to add a melodic quality to his speech.

Family stories often speak of William's kind and happy demeanor.
