Lyle D. Young, 83, of 6 - 27th Avenue S.W., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died early Sunday following a lingering illness at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Services: 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at Stonebridge Church, Cedar Rapids, by Rev. Randy Scheil and Rev. Robin Tyner. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, July 5, 2011, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

Lyle was born in Anamosa, Iowa, on April 23, 1928, to Harold and Martha (Kaufman) Young. Lyle's parents moved to Marion, Iowa, in 1936, and he graduated from Marion High School in 1946. In June 1946, he enlisted in the Navy and proudly served during peacetime on the U.S.S. Missouri battleship for 2 years. He married Geraldine Freisinger on February 12, 1949, while attending the University of Iowa. To this union were born three children, Connie (Tom) Lander, Keith (Tracy), and Mark (Jamie) all of Cedar Rapids.

From 1950 to 1952, he attended the Milwaukee School of Engineering learning refrigeration and air conditioning. From 1952 to 1960, he worked for various air conditioning and refrigeration companies, including Borden's Ice Cream and running his own refrigeration business for a year and a half. In 1960, he joined the Local #125 Plumbers and Pipefitters Union and proudly displayed his air conditioning and refrigeration skills for 30 years until 1990, when he retired.

Also surviving are his beloved sister, Lois of Marion; and his grandchildren, Tiffany Jergenson, Chris Hayes, Zack Young, Katie Pro, Laura Young, Alecia Lander, Krista Young and Shawntel Young; and nine great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Gerry; his second wife, Dee Haars; his son who died in infancy; and his older brother, Keith who died in WWII.
Lyle truly cherished his family and first and foremost the love of his life Gerry.

Lyle enjoyed gardening, Hawkeye football, woodworking, fishing, spending time with his grandchildren and teasing his older sister Lois.
Dad could fix just about anything and certainly made some beautiful wood creations for his children, sister, and numerous friends in addition to fixing and installing air conditioning systems.

Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed in Lyle's memory to the Cedar Rapids Humane Society or St. Luke's Hospice
