Obituary - The Times-Argus

BARNES--Esther Osmar was born in Headcorn, Kent, England in 1820 and died of old age at the home of her son W. R. Barnes in the town of Lisbon, this county, June 15, 1914. She was married at the age of 22 years to Thomas Barnes of Tenterden, Kent, England. In 1854 they immigrated to American and settled in Racine county where they engaged in farming, and in 1867 they came to the town of Lisbon locating on the farm upon which she died. She was the mother of but one child, her son William, who survives her. She was the oldest in a family of fifteen children. Two sisters, Mrs. E. E. Ottowa who lives with Mr. Barnes and Mrs. Fanny Hinds of England and also six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren survive her. She joined the Church of England when sixteen years of age and remained true to her faith to the last. She always retained good eyesight and never used spectacles, being able to read and sew without them. She has often read aloud to the family for ten hours at a stretch without stopping, and was never confined to her bed by illness except during the last week of her life. During the past two years she has pieced thirty-one bed quilts. For sixty years she never went too bed until her son would return home at night, no matter how early or late he came in. She was a good wife and mother and did innumerable good things during her life. Funeral services were held from the Methodist church yesterday afternoon, Rev. F. R. Harding officiating and there was a large attendance. Relatives from out of twon present were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Fredricksen of Portage, Burial was in the family lot in the New Lisbon Cemetery beside her husband. The Times-Argus extends sympathy to the bereaved ones.

Note: We are not sure of her exact birth date; the obit says 1820 but other records have her born in June 1821.
