Louis W. Linger, of Front Royal, Virginia, died July 19, 2011, at the Winchester Medical Center.
He was born the 2nd day of September, 1934 in Clio, Roane County, West Virginia, the son of the late Wade Linger and Lulu Linger.
Visitation will take place Friday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home in Front Royal. The funeral will be conducted on Saturday at noon at Marlow Heights Baptist Church.
He was educated in Roane County Schools and graduated from Walton High School in 1952. He attended West Virginia Tech, and graduated with a degree in Physical Education and minor in Math in 1956. Mr. Linger later attended Marshall University where he earned his Master's Degree. It was also in 1956 that he married the love of his life, Ruth Johnston.
Louis served as a public educator for over forty years. He loved coaching, and in 1961, Louis took the Buffalo High School basketball team to the West Virginia state semi-finals for the first time in the school's history. He was 27 years old at the time. Other assignments in West Virginia included teaching and coaching at Van High School and Winfield High School, Principal of Buffalo High School and Principal of his alma mater, Walton High School.
Mr. Linger and his family moved to Front Royal, Virginia in 1971 where he held public education positions ranging from Secondary Supervisor in the central office, to Director of Industrial Cooperative Training, and Math Teacher. For 20 years, Louis served as the Warren County High School Golf Coach. His conversation was full of events from work and the people he worked for and with. This work was in his heart and mind until the day he died.
He was a Mason, former Worshipful Master of Unity Lodge #146 A.F.&A.M., member of Hiram Royal Arch Chapter #45, John Dove Arch Chapter #21. He served on Bod Priode Council 203 AMD, Winchester Commandery #12 Knghts Templer, and was ACCA Shriner, Blue Ridge Shrine Club, Valley of Virginia, York Rite College #161 and 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason.
Louis was a member of the Marlow Heights Baptist Church in Front Royal.
Mr. Linger was an avid sports fan, and his favorite sport was football. His favorite teams were the Washington Redskins and whoever was playing Dallas. On Saturdays, he was always a WVU Mountaineer fan, and traveled to Morgantown at least once a year to see a game in person. Having officiated hundreds of ball games over several decades, he was always the last person to criticize the referee.
When he moved to Front Royal, Louis began buying season passes to the National Park. He spent many days hiking the trails, often with his sons. Although Lou was an avid outdoorsman, he was not a hunter. His time in the woods was spent either hiking or foraging for dead and down trees for firewood; which he cut, split, and burned in wood stoves for many years.
In his later years, Louis spent many a weekend with his beloved wife Ruth, along with many grandchildren as they camped and played at Kings Dominion. To this day, his grown grandchildren declare that it can't be camping unless ice cream lights are strung across the canopy. And everyone who knew him will remember the joy he shared as he sang and played several musical instruments including the piano, guitar, and banjo. More recently he adopted a group of deer that eagerly stand by and await Lou's call "Here Deer!"
Louis was preceded in death by his only sibling, Phillip Page Linger, who died in 1998.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ruth Elizabeth Linger; sons, Wade Linger and his wife Jill, John David Linger and his wife Mary, Henry Allen Linger; and daughter, Kimberly Ruth Brooks and her husband Tracy. He is also survived by grandchildren, Rhoda Elizabeth Martin and her husband Lee, Robert Wade Linger, Wade Bennington Linger, David Scott Linger, Daniel Everett Westerfield, John David Linger, Jr., Matthew James Linger, Christopher Todd Linger, Amanda Lee Ries, Brian Allen Linger, Heather Marie Wilson and her husband Drew, Kevin Allen Linger, Amanda Maye Linger, and Blake Alexander Brooks. Great-grandchildren include Molly P. Martin and Maggie L. Martin.
