CHARLES J. GUENTHER, noted Midwestern U.S. poet and columnist, was nicknamed the "Poet Laureate of St. Louis" for many years. A native of St. Louis, MO, Guenther was a widely published writer and poet, in addition to being the poetry critic for the ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH. A past president of the St. Louis Writers' Guild and a founding member of the St. Louis Poetry Society, Guenther lived in the historic Compton Heights neighborhood of South St.Louis City and maintained a civil government job at the Defense Mapping and Aerospace Center in the Soulard area of South St. Louis while conducting his extensive writing and poetic career, his true love.
His wife ESTHER L. GUENTHER (1923-present) collaborated with him on the local and national publishing and editing of his many works.
He frequently gave lectures and poetry readings around the U.S.A. on numerous literary subjects as well as his own works, and was widely sought out as a "barometer" for contemporary American poetry by newspapers, literary magazines and the broadcast media.
CHARLES also periodically served as a guest instructor at local colleges and universities on poetry. After his death at age 88, he was buried at St. Paul's Churchyard in South St. Louis County, where his upright Missouri red granite monument is inscribed with the word "POET."
