"Richard G. Thompson, 79, of 5707 East Cemetery Rd. SW, died Saturday, Jan 12, 2008, surrounded by his family in his home after a long illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel, by the Rev. Mike Townsley. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the chapel. Burial: Fairfax Cemetery, Fairfax.
Survivors include his wife, Nadine; his children, Roger (Carol) Thompson of Ely, Mark (Doni) Thompson of Tulsa, Okla., Scott Thompson of Coralville, and Bill (Becky) Thompson of Marion; seven grandchildren, Amanda, Adam, Alyssa, Rachel, Kendra, Nolan, Angela; and two great-grandchildren, Cory and Kayleen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Fred; and two sisters, Ruth and Clara.
Richard was born April 16, 1928, in Creston, Iowa, the son of Guy and Lillian Thompson. He married Nadine Tate on June 2, 1957, in Cedar Rapids. He served in the Navy in World War II. Richard had worked for Smulekoff's. He farmed in southwest Cedar Rapids for many years. After retiring from farming he was a driver for the Grant Wood Area Educational Agency. He enjoyed mall walking, eating out with family and friends, and his favorite, was spending time with his grandchildren. Richard was known for his enjoyable sense of humor and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Memorials may be made to St. Luke's Hospice."
