"Dudley, John. Private, Capt. Abraham Batcheller's co., Col. Jonathan Holman's regt.; service, 10 days; company marched to Providence, R.I., on an alarm in Dec., 1776. Roll sworn to in Worcester Co."
From the History of Sutton, 1704-1876, Pg. 773:
"This regiment, being composed largely of men from Sutton, and under the command of a Sutton officer, was usually known and styled as 'The Sutton Regiment'. It was destined to be a very severe and long continued service of nearly two years, during which it was engaged in many battles with the enemy, and finally, if we accept the evidence of a high British authority, in the great decisive battle of the war, the battle of Saratoga."
Note: The Joseph Dudley, who is interred about 50 feet to the right, may be their son.
