Enlisted in Troop M, 1st NY Cavalry Regiment, June 23, 1916, at Geneseo, NY. He mustered in , June 30, 1916, with Troop M, for service on the Mexican Boarder. The 1st NY Cavalry was assigned to Camp McAllen, TX, as part of the 6th NY Division (later to be the 27th Division). He returned to New York with his Troop and mustered out of border service, March 20. 1917.

World War 1, Troop M was reorganized into Company A, 104th Machine Gun Battalion, 27th Division and assigned to Camp Wadsworth, SC, for training. On March 7, 1918, Company A was transferred and designated, Company D, 105th Machine Gun Battalion, 27th Division.

After training at Camp Wadsworth the 105th MG Battalion shipped out for Europe, May 17, 1918, from Newport News, VA, aboard the USS Calomares, docking at St. Nazaire , France, May 30, 1918. The 105th Machine Gun Battalion had additional combat training in France and entered the Lines, July 17, 1918. He saw combat in both Belgium and France. The last battle for the 105th MG Battalion was, October 18, 1918, at Jonc de Mer Ridge ( vicinity of Arbre Guernon ), France. Nov. 16, 1918 he was transferred into Headquarters Company, 105th Machine Gun Battalion, 27th Division.

He returned to the States with the 105th MG Battalion, aboard the USS Leviathan, from Brest , France, February 23, 1919. The battalion docked, March 6, 1919, at Hoboken, NJ. March 25, 1919, he marched in the great " Welcome Home Parade " for the 27th Division, up 5th Avenue, in New York City. He was discharged , April 1, 1919, at Camp Upton , VA.
