James Donald Carney was born September 8, 1922, in Des Moines, Iowa, to James G. and Myrtle Carney.

On September 8, 1942, James entered active service at Ft. Snelling, Minnesota, and was trained in the Army Air Corps. Staff Sergeant James Carney, ball gunner on a Liberator bomber, was killed in action on June 26, 1944, at Moosebierbaum, Austria.
