Franklin Fearing was born in Wareham, Ma, May 3rd, 1792. In 1814, when 31 years of age, he emigrated to Waterford, Washington County, Ohio, where he spent twenty years of his life in building keel boats and boating on the Muskingum and Ohio Rivers. In Waterford, in April 1817, he was united in marriage to Miss Hannah Coolidge. The wife still survives him, having been the companion of all his joys and sorrows for sixty-one years. In 1835(*) Mr. Fearing removed to New Harmony, Indiana, where he became the friend and companion of Robert Dale Owen, to whose famous community he attached himself. Owen's experiment failed, and in the fall of 1844 Mr. Fearing came to Davenport with his family. Not long after his arrival he became a member of the temperance society, and helped to organize Scott Division No. 1 Sons of Temperance, and he has been a radical and consistent advocate of temperance ever since. His life has been irreproachable for honesty and uprightness with his fellow man. About two years ago he united with the Dutch Reformed Church and lived a consistent member of that church.
At the age of 85 years he is called from earthly scenes. He leaves sons, daughters and daughters-in-law, and many friends, who are proud of his record, and who dote upon their mother.
The funeral will take place at his residence, 1919 Perry Street, at 10 o'clock Thursday morning. The friends of the deceased are invited to attend.
