Nereida Alvarez, 68, of Newark, passed away on February 14, 2011. Born in The Bronx, New York, Mrs. Alvarez resided in Newark for most of her life. She was employed with the City of Newark in the Office of Senior Services. Previous employment was with the Newark Board of Education.
She was predeceased by her parents, Angela Navarro and Juan Alvarez; one sister, Angela Alvarez and one brother, Samuel Alvarez.
Survivors include: her son, Sylvester Dobson, II of Newark; her daughter, Angela C. McKenzie of Newark; three grandchildren, Alicia Nereida Whavers, Angelle Whavers and Lacy Dobson; one sister, Jenny Alvarez; and seven brothers, John, Gilbert, Louis, Ralph, Ruben, Nelson and Jerry Alvarez.
Memorial services will be held Monday, February 21, 2011 from 12 noon to 2 pm at St. Luke's AME Church, 146-156 Clinton Avenue, Newark. A gathering will follow at Allure, 415-417 Halsey Street, off of West Kinney Street in Newark.
