Wharton (as he was known, his middle name being his mother's maiden name) was the third of six children. At 23 he lost both of his parents to tuberculosis. He lived with his brother Harry and sister-in-law Sara near Dover, Delaware. Theirs was a farming household.

On October 17, 1914, Wharton married Eva Cockran Frear and they soon also moved to Philadelphia, where they lived during their married life. Wharton worked as a produce salesman for the John P. Wilson store, a business in the extended family, at 116 Dock Street.

At age 30 Wharton's draft registration described him as medium in height, stout in build, with blue eyes and light-colored hair, slightly balding.

The Wilsons had two sons, Joseph Allen and George N., who were both born in Philadelphia, but after Wharton died at 43 of a ruptured appendix, Eva moved back to her native Delaware.
