Walt also operated a Beal's Grill at Lake Okoboji, IA, in the summers, closing his Omaha restaurant until college classes resumed in the fall. In the summers, Hazel and Walt lived in one of two lakeside cottages which she owned on Lake Okoboji; the cottages were named "Brown Haze" (for herself and her daughter Brownie). When she died, Hazel bequeathed the cottages to Brownie.
Hazel was a member of St. Ann's Sodality at Creighton University's St. John's Catholic Church.
On Saturday, February 9, 1957, Hazel fractured her leg in a fall on ice. Three weeks later, on Friday night, March 1, 1957, Hazel, 63 years old, died of a blood clot while still hospitalized at Omaha's Doctors Hospital. Her wake with 8:00 p.m. rosary was held at Heafey and Heafey Mortuary in Omaha on March 4. Following an 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, March 5, funeral Mass at St. John's Church, she was buried at Calvary Cemetery, Omaha.
