On 4 Feb 1946, at almost 18, Robert Schulz enlisted in the US Army Air Forces (USAAF). He trained as a radio, airframe, and engine mechanic and served in the Pacific on the Northern Mariana Islands. After 36 months of service his honorable discharge papers showed the new military branch: USAF.
