Edwin was born to Ruth (Dolbeer) and Cutting Cook, Jr. in Topsham. He was the youngest of their at least six children, his siblings being Samuel, Mary, William, Eliza and George. He might have had 3 or 4 more older sisters. I do not know what type of education Edwin received, however he could read and write in English.

On November 23, 1868 Edwin married Mary Elizabeth and together they had ten children: Harry, Idella, William, Carroll, John, Daniel, Emma, Phineas, Lawrence and Joseph.

Edwin lived in Orange County, Vermont until his fifties when he moved to Pleasant Ridge, Iowa where he and his family settled on a farm. After living in Pleasant Ridge for 20 years he and his wife moved to New London, Iowa.
