Agnes was born in Gatehead, England to Elsie and Joseph Starkie. She was six in 1922 when they traveled by ship to America and her younger brother James was three. Her mother died shortly after their arrival in Columbiana County, Ohio, and she began living with Jennie and Carl Blattman , who eventually adopted her. Agnes brother lived with Jennie's sister Lucy Covert and he returned to England. She married Elmer Early in 1937 and they had a son Carl. Agnes and Elmer divorced and she married Josepf Kozjan in 1951.
