Johann Friedrich ("Fritz") Schwalbe was the son of Michael Schwalbe, a cobbler, and his wife, Friederike Dehn. He was born in Menkin, Prenzlau District, Brandenburg, Prussia (Germany) and emigrated to the United States in 1855 with his parents and siblings to Sheboygan County, Wisconsin. From there he evidently moved to Portage Lake, Keweenaw County, a busy mining area in northern Michigan at the time as that is from where he enlisted in Company H, 3rd Michigan Cavalry. The publication "Record of Service of Michigan Volunteers of the Civil War 1861 - 1865," Volume 33, indicates that Fritz Schwalbe enlisted at age 23 on September 9, 1861 and was mustered in on October 11, 1861. He died at Duvall's Bluff, Arkansas on August 11, 1864 as a result of disease incurred during his Civil War service for the Union Forces and was buried there. Susequently, those Union Soldiers buried there were disinterred and reburied in the National Cemetery in Little Rock, Arkansas. He had not married prior to entering the service.
