Ethel M. Kelly (1925 - 2011)

Published in Ventura County Star from December 7 to December 10, 2011

Ethel M. Kelly, a longtime resident of Ventura, passed away at an assisted living home in Ventura on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011.

Born in Santa Barbara March 24, 1925, she moved to Ventura at age 13 with her great-grandmother to help run the Cecil Hotel on Ventura Avenue. She retired from the Ventura School District as an assistant administrator to the Ventura Superintendent of Schools, and was the past Grand President of the Native Daughters of the Golden West.
During the great earthquake in 1925 in Santa Barbara, Ethel was pulled from her crib by her father just before her crib filled with bricks. After the earthquake Ethel and her family had to live in the Santa Barbara Park until homes became available. In 1942 at age 17, Ethel's family moved to Hollywood, Calif. She stayed with her best friend Roselle in Ventura until she graduated from Ventura High School. She moved to Hollywood after graduation and lived with her mother and grandmother.

She worked at Lockheed as an inspector for the P-38 during WWII. Ethel was married in 1946 to John H. Kelly and would have been married 50 years to John before his passing. They moved to Ventura and purchased their first home in 1951. John was born and raised in Victoria, Canada, and received his citizenship by joining the Army in WWII. Ethel was a longtime member of the Native Daughters of the Golden West and was involved in all the committees that the Native Daughters provided for the community. Children's Foundation was one of their successful foundations. She also was on the committee for the El Camino Real bells and signs along Highway 101 and at historic sites. As a Grand President, she spent a year visiting all the Native Daughter parlors in California and really enjoyed all her visits with each parlor.
Ethel's mother's family, the Hallidays, came over on the ship Empress of Ireland, from Leeds, Yorkshire, England. Her father, Stanley Moore, was from Lompoc, Calif. He originated from Kentucky.

Ethel's death is preceded by husband, John Kelly, and their first son, Michael Kelly. Ethel is survived by her daughter, Gale Price and husband Jim of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; her son, Brian Kelly and wife Shirley of Ventura; and her youngest daughter, Vicki Drake and husband Philip of North Richland Hills, Texas; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Ethel Kelly will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

No reception will be held due to Ethel and John Kelly's wishes: Neptune Society.
