Frank grew up in Berwick, Columbia County, PA, and graduated from Berwick HS in 1885. In Philadelphia, he studied acting at first, and later, about 1890, he worked in the candy business. He met his future wife in Phila., Mary Sheahan, who had been committed to enter a Catholic convent, but after falling mutually in love they were married in May 1889 in Camden, NJ. After his father died in 1897, the family moved to Jermyn, Lackawanna County, PA to run the H.L. Freas & Son feed mill business. They later opened a gasoline station for automobiles in Jermyn.
