DR. WOODBRIDGE DIES; EX-LAW DEAN AT W.& M.
Williamsburg-Dr. Dudley Warner Woodbridge, 73, retired dean of the College of William and Mary's Marshall-Wythe School of Law, died Monday.
Dr. Woodbridge was named dean of the college's department of jurisprudence and law school in 1950, and was appointed dean of Marshall-Wythe School of Law when the school was renamed in 1953.
He retired as law school dean in 1962, after 35 years of active teaching at William and Mary. Following his retirement, he taught at the college on a limited basis.
Born in Bellaire, Ohio, Dr. Woodbridge received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Illinois.
He became an assistant professor of law at William and Mary in 1927 and an associate professor a year later. In 1942 he was made acting dean of the department of jurisprudence.
Upon his retirement in 1962, the colleges board of directors appointed Dr. Woodbridge dean emeritus of the law school.
For more than 30 years he served as editor of Virginia Bar Notes, and published law review notes and articles in a number of legal journals.
In 1950, Life magazine named Dr. Woodbridge as one of America's eight "great teachers".
He received the college's Sullavan Award and Jefferson Award, given for personal and professional achievement, and was a member of the Order of the Coif, Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Rube Belle Mendenhall Woodbridge; a daughter, Mrs. Julia W. Oxrieder of California; two sons, Dr. Hensley Charles Woodbridge of Carbondale, Ill., and William L. Woodbridge of Williamsburg; and a sister, Mrs. Laura W. Peeples of Chattanooga, Tenn.
A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, with burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
