Snell Avenue in San Jose was named after Thomas E. Snell who was born in Essex County, Masschusetts on October 25, 1830. In 1854 Snell moved to San Jose where he embarked on the butcher trade. He purchased 800 acres of land in south San Jose, 300 of which were cultivated and 500 of which were used as pasture.
