SNELL - In San Jose, August 3, 1903, Thomas E. Snell, beloved father of Mrs. Emma A. Frost, Sister Mary Josephine, Mrs. Teresa S. Blake, Everett T. Snell, Mrs. Lena Barrera, and Kitty Snell of Los Angeles, a native of Massachusetts aged 72 years.

Snell Avenue in San Jose was named after Thomas E. Snell who was born in Essex County, Masschusetts on October 25, 1830. In 1854 Snell moved to San Jose where he embarked on the butcher trade. He purchased 800 acres of land in south San Jose, 300 of which were cultivated and 500 of which were used as pasture. Snell owned 400 head of cattle and became Santa Clara County's largest producer of butter. He and his wife Catherine raised seven children. Snell Avenue leads to what was once Thomas Snell's ranch at the bottom of the Santa Teresa foothills.
