In 1929, at the age of 9, Lyall became the North American Amateur Outdoor Speed Skating Champion in Lake Placid, New York. He continued ice skating by playing Ice Hockey during his teen years, also playing for West Point and then the Air Force while in Germany in the late 1940’s.
Lyall was a 1937 graduate of Saranac Lake High School, Saranac Lake, New York; then graduated from Northwood School, Lake Placid, New York in 1938 and attended St. Lawrence University, Canton, New York; graduated from the United States Military Academy, West Point, on D-Day, June 6, 1944. He served in the USAF as a fighter pilot and bomber pilot, 2 years during the Korean War, 1950-52 as a B-29 pilot with the 307th Bomb Wing in Kadena Air Base, Japan. He observed the Inchon landing while flying north on a bombing run. He then served for 4 years in the Pentagon, SHAPE HQ in Paris, France for several years. He retired from the United States Air Force in 1962. Aftr that he had a 20+ year career with United Airlines at the Flight Training Center in Denver. He was Manager Flight Operations Marketing in Denver and again retired, this time in 1988.
LTC Dyall was a member of the Order of Daedalians, Mile High Flight 18; Military Officers Association, Mile High Chapter; National Association of Uniformed Services – Rocky Mountain Chapter, Colorado #1; Veterans of Foreign Wars - Post#1; American Legion, LCW Post#1.
Celebration of Lyall’s Life on FRIDAY, JUNE 25th, 12 Noon, at Wings Over The Rockies Air & Space Museum, 7711 East Academy Blvd., Denver. Committal Service at the Cadet Cemetery, late August 2004, USMA West Point.
He is survived by his beloved wife Esmée of 35 years; Lyall is also survived by his two daughters, Susan (Robert) Faber, Montgomery Village, MD; Tracy (Donald) Goldberg, Chevy Chase, MD; his son, David Lyall (Michelle), Yampa, CO; 7 grandchildren, Bruce, Lisa, Hanna, Ben, Lyall, Dylan, Chase; 4 great-grandchildren, Drew, Abby, Nick & Paige.
Cause of death: lung cancer.
