Alger M. Smith, age 76 years, passed away unexpectedly, Monday afternoon, April 3, 2000, at his residence. He was born on June 16, 1923 in Caro to Charles and Myrtle (Cross) Smith. Mr. Smith lived most of his lifetime in Hampton Township. He is a retired maintenance personnel with the Essexville-Hampton School System. Mr. Smith was a member of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel. He enjoyed carpentry, fishing, gardening and the outdoors.
Surviving are his wife, the former Helen Lorencz married on June 16, 1951; four children, Thomas (Katherine) Smith of Bay City, Mary Carol Smith, Jane (George)Weiler, Paul (Jane) Smith, all of Essexville; nine grandchildren, Tom, Christine, Trevor and Jordan Smith, Todd, Jeff, Janelle Weiler, Grant and Patrick Smith; three great grandchildren, Mitchell Taylor, Gage and Madison Smith; three brothers, Lawrence Smith of Cass City, Charles (Jessie) Smith of Flint, Robert (Isabelle) of Vassar; two sisters, Donna Parker of Cass City, Elaine (Ben) Watson of Caro; numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Smith has a brother and five sisters, Harland, Marguerite, Leona, Arletta, Geraldine, and Venetta, that are deceased.
The funeral service will be celebrated Friday morning at 11 o'clock from St. John the Evangelist Church, Essexville. Rev. Fr. Thomas J. McNamara will preside. Interment will be in St. Patrick Cemetery. A prayer service will be held Thursday evening at 7:30pm in the funeral home. Friends may call at Stapish East (Essexville) on Wednesday evening from 6 to 9pm ande Thursday between the hours of 2 and 9pm. Memorials are available at the funeral home for the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Camp Fishtales, and for St. John church. Mr. Smith will lie in state at the church Friday morning from 10am until the time of service.
