Irvie, as he was known, was a promising baseball player and at one time was persued by the major leagues. He was also a well known boxer in Syracuse. He is credited to saving more than one person's life from drowning in the canal near his home on Lodi Street.
At one time he worked as a Brewery Malster in a Syracuse malting company then as a machinist.
On 24 July 1918 he entered into service in the U.S.Army and served until discharge on 08 March 1919. He served with the 87th Division Battery, 332th Field Artillery.
