Jessie Mae Bowersock, d/o Israel Bowersock, a showman, and one of Israel's four wives, Mary A. Warden, a school teacher, was born in Burlington, Iowa. She married first Maurice Cathcart of Scotland, an actor, on Sep 30, 1891. Known as "The Cathcarts" on the vaudeville circuit, while wintering away from Ringling Bros. in the South, they had a daughter, Agnes Mae Cathcart, on Jan 7, 1891 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Of Agnes' five marriages, the third was to my grandfather's brother, William Goms, in Havre, Montana. Maurice and Jessie toured the United States giving performances.

The team toured and performed with The Great Circus of Savannah, Georgia, Eugene Robinson's Museum and Weinger's Garden in New Orleans, O'Brien, French & De Arley Railroad Circus, Dick Sutton's Circus, and Dick's New Model Circus and Menagerie. "Jessie Bowersock, formerly of the Cathcarts, Maurice and Jessie, doing rings and song and dance lady, has closed with "Popcorn George's Show" [predecessor of Ringling Bros Circus].

The Cathcarts joined a Ringling Bros tour on June 29, 1891 in Duluth, Minnesota as sketch artists and performers. Jessie appeared in "The Great Roman Hippodrome Races." They closed in St. Charles, Missouri on Sep 12, 1891.

Maurice had several female dance partners before he disappeared from the circuit at the end of 1894 and may have passed on. Jessie married second, G. Edward "Eddie" Schwager about 1893. They were known as "Ed. and Jessie Foley" on the vaudeville circuit. On Nov. 14, 1896, the Foley troupe now included Jessie's five-year-old daughter, Agnes Cathcart, who was billed as Agnes Foley when she made her first public appearance as a "buck" dancer at the "Casino" in St. Louis, Missouri. Eddie Foley was a highly recognized "Buck and Wing" dancer. He worked his way up to be a manager and an owner of several venues. The troupe stayed together until 1899. She divorced Eddie in Buffalo, New York in 1903.

She married third, John W. Scanlon of McKean County, Pennsylvania, also an actor who she had known since the Crockford Music Hall, Louisville in 1900. They had two children: Vivian (AKA Merriam) in 1907, and Maude in 1911. In 1966, a correction was filed with the McKean County Courthouse revealing "Vivian Scanlon's" real name was "Katherine Murial Scanlon."

COLEGROVE MAN ENDS LIFE WITH SHOT GUN
First Tries to Shoot Wife. Probably Demented.
BRADFORD, Pa., Sept. 17.-John W. Scanlon of Colegrove. Pa., yesterday attempted to shoot his wife with a revolver, pulling the trigger three times, but for some reason the weapon failed to discharge, so he turned the gun on himself and ended his own life. Mrs. Scanlon was barely able to run from the house before her husband turned the revolver on himself. It is said that Scanlon's mind was unbalanced due to excessive indulgence in intoxicants. He was 47 years old and was once a vaudeville actor. Besides his wife he is survived by two children and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Scanlon of Colegrove, five brothers and two sisters.

Jessie's fourth marriage was to George Washington Eisenhuth of Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, a railroader, on Sep 14, 1916 in Elk County, Pennsylvania. They lived in Colegrove, McKean County, Pennsylvania until her death in 1935. Although her name had not appeared in the variety magazines since her performance at Wise's Market Theatre, Toledo in 1906, her occupation was still "actress."
