PERSONS, BEATRICE LYDIA "BIDDIE", 93, of South Barre, died May 24 at the Woodridge Nursing Home. Born Jan. 5, 1914, in South Barre, she was the daughter of Dr. Ernest H. and Ida (Gordon) Bancroft. She attended South Barre Elementary and was a 1932 graduate of Spaulding High School. "Biddie" married Wesley Persons in 1943 and lived her entire married life in South Barre. He predeceased her May 17, 1975. She worked many years for Granite City Creamery, and also for the Clyde Reynold's Insurance Agency. She later worked for Paige and Campbell Insurance Agency, from which she retired in 1979. "Biddie" loved to relate stories about her early childhood in South Barre. She enjoyed visiting the farms with her father, a veterinarian, and spent many happy hours at her grandparents' farm on Bailey Ave. in Barre. Her uncle, Lowell McLeod, trained and raced trotting horses and it was a great treat to ride on the sulky with Uncle Lowell! "Biddie" and her family spent many happy times following Lowell to the county fairs and in later years to Saratoga. She enjoyed a close relationship with her husband's family, the Nyes, who lived next door for most of those years. At 86 she moved to Quarry Hill Apartments in Graniteville, and enjoyed the friendship of the many residents there. "Biddie" enjoyed playing cards, traveling to see her family, and playing bingo with the other residents of Quarry Hill, as well as with her friends at Woodridge. She especially enjoyed the yearly Bancroft family reunions and her grandchildren. She was a lifelong member of the Hedding United Methodist Church in Barre, serving over the years as superintendent and teacher of the Sunday school, treasurer, and a member of many committees. She belonged to the Gamma Delta Circle of the United Methodist Women, South Barre PTA, South Barre Library and the South Barre community club. After retirement she volunteered as a guardian ad litem. She also volunteered at the Central VT Hospital and then at Woodridge Nursing Home, only ending when she became a resident there in February 2005. "Biddie" is survived by two daughters, Ann Allbee and her husband Roger of Townshend, and Susan Pirie and her husband Ed of West Topsham; five grandchildren, Katie Welch and her husband, Skip, Douglas Allbee and his wife, Susan, Karen Allbee, Jamie Pirie and his wife Tiki, and Melissa Pirie; three great-grandchildren, Aubrey and Rylee Welch and Isabella Allbee; a brother, Ernest Bancroft of Barre; and many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her three sisters, Bernice Maxham, Barbara Sawyer, and Beverly Benjamin, her two brothers, Gordon (Doc) Bancroft and James Bancroft, and by two nephews.
