Arthur was the third child of eight born to Nancy (Slinkard) and Daniel Proffer. Older siblings were Elvis Francis "E.F." and Bertha. Luther Alexander "L.A.", Minnie, Andrew, John Moses, and Kendall were his younger siblings.

Arthur's education ended after finishing the 7th grade and in the 1930's and 1940's he worked as a Cement Finisher.

He married Dora (Crump) Ward sometime after 1900 and helped raise her two children, Floyd and Eula, after she was widowed. In 1905 Arthur and Dora had a child of their own, Edwin.

Arthur and Dora made Billings, Montana their home for most of their life together. They did live in San Francisco, California for a short time in the 1930's.

Arthur Lee was laid to rest on May 15, 1976.
