Dora was the fifth child born to Eliza (Kennison) and Alfred Crump; her older siblings were Andrew, Mary, Charity, and Ada. Her younger siblings were Lula, Abner and Emma. Her father was previously married and she had a half brother John.

Dora's education ended when she finished the eighth grade.

In 1898 at the age of 23 she married Jesse Louis Ward. They had two children Floyd and Eula and lived in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Before Eula turned one, Jesse was killed in a railroad accident.

She then married Arthur Proffer and had another son Edwin. The 1910 and 1920 Census has them living in the Billings, Montana area. In 1930 they were living in San Francisco but returned to Billings by 1935.

Dora was laid to rest on June 23, 1948.
