Nobility, Count Palatine of the Rhine. Eldest of the children of Friedrich II of Swabia and his second wife Agnes von Saarbrücken. He married first Elisabeth von Stahleck and secondly Irmgard von Henneberg. His half-brother Friedrich Barbarossa named him count palatine in 1156. He founded the city of Heidelberg. As his sons all died before him he was succeeded as count palatine by his son-in-law Heinrich von Braunschweig.
