Robert Bruce Porter, son of George and Jane Bruce Porter was born in New York City, February 11, 1854. He died in Holton, Kansas, August 21, 1934. His parents moved near Burlington, Iowa in 1861, where he was educated in the public schools and in the Burlington Business College. He was married to Martha Paul of Mediapolis, Iowa, February 18, 1885. He spent the early years of his life on the farm, but later had many and varied interests. He spent several years in the northwest, where he became interested in the lumber business. In 1887, he came to Holton with W. A. Boyd and they bought the Scott Lumber Yard. Later Robert Canfield and C.M. Hull were taken into the firm, which operated under the name of the Holton Lumber Company. They owned yards at Seneca, Kansas, Fairfield, Iowa, and Sterling, Nebraska, and a sawmill at Orange, Louisiana. Later this partnership was dissolved and Mr. Porter entered the real estate business in Kansas City, Missouri, where he lived for more than 20 years. He spent three years in Miami, Florida, then moved to Syracuse, Kansas, where the greater part of his real estate holdings were located. He remained there until coming to Holton in 1931. He had a severe attack of influenza three years ago and again last year and has been confined to his bed most of the time since then. He was noted for remarkable vigor of body and mind, a keen sense of humor and justice, a lover of children, a generous kindly heart, and the faculty of making and keeping friends.

He is survived by his wife, two children, George A. Porter of Riverside, California and Mrs. E.O. Patterson of Detroit, Michigan, three grandchildren, E. O. Patterson, Jr., Shirley and Elizabeth Porter, two sisters, Mrs. W. A. Boyd, of Holton and Mrs. G. M. Robb of Fresno, California, and his many friends, all of whom will greatly miss his wise counsel and happy life. An elder sister, Mrs. E. J. Mahaffy, preceded him in death last January.

Funeral services were held in the home of his sister, Mrs. W. A. Boyd, Thursday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock. The Rev. Fred M. Newlin, pastor of the Presbyterian church spoke of some of the virtues of Mr. Porter, including his cheerful disposition, his patience, his hospitality and his humility. Interment was made in the Holton cemetery where the Masons had charge of the service. Honorary pall bearers were G. W. Zimmerman, H.O. Tudor, W. B. Fredricey, J. P. Moor, W. R. Ireland and J.H. Sudlow. The active pall bearers were Henry Keller, L.E. Armel, Wallace Canfield, Chas. Bateman, Frank Sharlock and Paul Segenhagen.
