Gladys Ruth Hansen, 84, died August 11, 2004 in Las Cruces, NM. Gladys was born in Bristol, CO, on January 29, 1920, and was one of six children born to Oscar and Mabel Strode.
Gladys is survived by her husband, Bernard Hansen of Las Cruces; two sons Keith Hansen and wife Glenda of Hereford, TX, and Harry Hansen and wife Kathy of Las Cruces; four grandchildren, Kevin and wife Ashley of Dallas, TX; Kyle Hansen and wife Stephanie of Dallas, TX; Megan Hansen and Jack Hansen, both of Las Cruces, NM; and great-grandchildren Emma and Lily Hansen of Dallas, TX.
She is preceded in death by a son Thomas Kent in 1977; by a granddaughter Laurie Ann Marie Hansen in 1973; and by her brother, Harry, and four sisters, Edith, Louise, Kathryn and Alyce.
Gladys attended schools in Bristol, CO, before her family moved to Los Angeles, CA, where she graduated from Belmont High School and Los Angeles City College. She married Bernard Hansen in Los Angeles in 1939, moving shortly thereafter to Las Cruces where her husband joined his father in the custom home building business.

Mrs. Hansen was an active businesswoman and politician. Her first position in Las Cruces was manager of the Las Cruces Credit Bureau. She was the opening manager of the first Montgomery Ward Catalog Store in Las Cruces. She was appointed Las Cruces City Clerk and served two different administrations, followed by an active real estate career.
Gladys was a prominent figure in the Democratic Party of Dona Ana County and New Mexico. Her political life began when she was elected Dona Ana County Clerk for the terms 1969 -1972. From 1972 - 1980 she held the position of New Mexico State Senator District 37, followed by four years in the County Clerk's office. Following her public service career, Mrs. Hansen served as a lobbyist for the New Mexico Association of Counties and the New Mexico Hospital Association.

Gladys was especially active in legislation dealing with the rights of women and children. During her years in the Senate, she was the successful supporter of 85 bills, including such legislation as the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, establishment of the Commission on the Status of Women, the Displaced Homemaker Office, the Domestic Violence Prevention Act, the Sex Crimes Prosecution and Treatment Act, adoption laws, child day care aid and equal credit laws. In addition, she served on the Senate Finance Committee and also the education and public affairs committees and several interim committees dealing with elections, education and tax study.

She was active in St. Paul's United Methodist Church where she served as President of the Board of Trustees, member of the Finance Committee and Administrative Board, and President of the United Methodist Women.
Gladys served as chairman of the Ethics and Elections Committee of the National Conference of State Legislatures, in which she traveled across the country. She was also president of the New Mexico Association of Counties. Gladys served in numerous community posts, including board membership for the Memorial Medical Center Board, United Fund Campaign, Las Cruces Boy's Club, and the American Heart Fund.

Gladys received many honors during her lifetime, including Woman of the Year (Business and Professional Women), Las Cruces Realtor of the Year, International Women's Year Award, Las Cruces Future Farmers of America Hall of Fame and many others.
Gladys will be remembered by her family for her strong spirit, get-to-work attitude, steadfast devotion to her family, and numerous contributions to Las Cruces and New Mexico.

Arrangements by Graham's Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 16, 2004, 225 West Griggs Ave., Las Cruces, NM. Burial will immediately follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
