Joseph Franklin ("Frank") Walter was born on his parents' Jackson Township farm south of Auburn, the second of six children of Joseph J. Walter (1849-1899) and Miranda Moody Walter (1855-1930), who are buried in Block 6 of Woodlawn Cemetery. He married Edith Gertrude Maurer (1884-1939) on December 20, 1902. They became the parents of three girls and three boys, all of whom lived to adulthood. In the course of his career with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, the family lived successively at Auburn Junction (now part of Auburn), Bascom, Ohio, Hoytville, Ohio, and Willard, Ohio, where he was B&O city agent. At Hoytville, he served on the town council and the school board and was president of the Red Cross. Deeply religious, he was active in the temperance movement. Dying of influenza contracted in the 1918 pandemic, his last words were, "It is all over. Good night."
