Anna was born in the village of Filsch, located a few miles north east of Trier, Germany.

She came to the US with her parents and siblings in 1855 and settled in Westphalia, Michigan.

Her first husband, Cornelius Austin died from wounds created by being shot during the Civil War. They had only been married about a year and he was in the war for much of that time and they did not have any children.

Anna married as her second husband, John Austin, Cornelius's younger half brother. John was also a Civil War soldier. They lived in the St. John's, Clinton Co., MI area for a while before moving to a farm on the north-east end of Crooked Lake in Evergreen Township, Montcalm County, MI - about 1/2 way between Crystal and Sheridan.
