Son of George Austin and Sarah "Sally" (Whitman) Austin Brown of Lysander, Onondaga Co, NY and Clinton Co, MI. He came to Michigan ca 1849 and settled near St. Johns, Clinton Co., MI. Moved to Muir, Ionia Co, MI ca 1878/79. Moved to the northeast shore of Crooked Lake in Evergreen township, Montcalm Co, MI in 1880.

CIVIL WAR SERVICE:

1) Private Co. B 8th MI Volunteer Infantry, 9-13-1861 to 2-15-1863.

Date of installment September 13, 1861, date of discharge February 15, 1863, length of service 1 yr 5 months. Disability incurred: lost two fingers, wound on head. (From the 1890 Census - Veteran's Schedule)

Austin, John, Clinton County. Enlisted in company B, Eighth Infantry Aug. 12, 1861 at St. Johns, for 3 years, age 19. Mustered Sept. 23, 1861. Discharged at Pleasant Valley, Md., Oct. 31, 1862. (From "Michigan Volunteers in the Civil War", Vol. 8, Page 8)

2) Private Co. M 7th MI Cavalry, 6-18-1863 - 7-23-1865.
