Civil War: Company H, 9th Kansas Cavalry

Seymour Ayres married (1) Elizabeth Kershaw at Rockingham, Iowa, on December 20, 1846, and they settled at Lyons, Iowa (1850 US Census). After her death he married (2) Margaretta Jane Hinton in Iowa in 1856 and they resided in Mitchell County (1856 IA Census). He had moved to Kansas by 1860 and was a resident at Verdigris in Woodson County (1860 US Census). He was a resident at Neosho Falls, Kansas, when he enlisted as a private for 3 years at Iolia, Kansas, on November 12, 1861. He was mustered into Company H, 9th Kansas Cavalry, on January 16, 1862. Following an accident that left him with a back injury and partial blindness, he was discharged for disability at Camp Brice (Leavenworth), Kansas, on June 11/13, 1862. After the war he settled at Grover in Ottawa County, where he served as postmaster until December 31, 1874 (1865 KS Census). He then moved to Trinidad in Las Animas County, Colorado, where he filed for a Civil War veteran disability pension on July 28, 1879, and received certificate No. 420,544. He was still living there with his family in 1880 (1880 US Census). He then moved to Wellington, Kansas, where he became a member of James Shield Post, No. 57, Grand Army of the Republic. He transferred out of Shield Post in late 1887 when he moved to Los Angeles County, California. He was living at Garden Grove, Los Angeles County, when he registered to vote on April 17, 1888 (1888 Los Angeles Great Register). He was admitted to the Pacific Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, at Sawtelle, Los Angeles County, from his home at Duarte, Los Angeles County, on February 6, 1901. He died at his home the following month. Soon after his death, Margaretta filed for a Civil War widow's pension on April 20, 1901, and received certificate No. 532,077.
