Child of second marriage of John Cosper, German immigrant and Revolutionary War veteran. At age 18, David moved to Tompkins County, New York, and married there. He enlisted in the army during the War of 1812 and saw action at Ft. George, Chippewa, Lundy's Lane and Niagara, where he was seriously wounded. He migrated to Pennsylvania, then to Knox County, Ohio. He settled in Concord Township, DeKalb County, Indiana in 1841.
