Known as "Uncle Billy." Union veteran, Civil War. Corporal. Enlisted at age 15 in 18th Indiana Volunteers. Re-enlisted in 30th Indiana Volunteers. Participated in taking of Atlanta; transferred to Mexican border after Appomattox. Was last surviving Civil War vet in Auburn, Indiana, at time of death. Married Mary Jane ("Mell") Walter (1848-1900) on Jan. 30, 1870.
