Although Ernst Hermann Hoeft was born on 10 June 1833, for some reason the year 1832 is shown on his headstone as well as on official documentation in the United States. The reason for this is unknown, but perhaps Ernst exaggerated his age because his wife was 2 years older than he was?

According to his birth/baptism record from the Bromberg Evangelical Uniate parish, Ernst was born on 10 June 1833 in the village of Gross Kupucziska, and baptized on August 11 in the Bromberg church. The village of Gross Kapucziska was located a few kilometers southeast of the city center of Bromberg, Grand Duchy of Posen, Prussia. (Prussia became the largest state within a unified Germany in 1871.) After the end of World War I, Bromberg and the surrounding area was re-incorporated into Poland (it had been part of Poland up until the First Partition of Poland in 1772), Bromberg once again became known by it's historical Polish name (Bydgoszcz), and Gross Kapucziska's name morphed slightly to Kapuściska. As the city grew over time, the village was annexed by the city, and now is simply a neighborhood within the city.

Ernst's parents were Michael Hoeft and Caroline Radatz, and he was the 7th out of their 8 children. Three of his older siblings died in infancy or childhood.

On 11 November 1855 at the age of 22, Ernst married Louise Radtke - a young woman from another Evangelical family in the Bromberg area. The Radtke family lived a few kilometers to the west of the city in the village of Miedzyn (now also part of the Bydgoszcz municipality). Ernst and Louise made their home there in Miedzyn for a few years before moving to the neighboring village of Klein Wilczak (now known as the Wilczak neighborhood of the city of Bydgoszcz).

There were 6 children known from their marriage, although only 3 survived:
Bertha Mathilde - born on 19 Feb 1857 in Miedzyn
Auguste Emilie - born on 19 Oct 1859, died on 15 Jul 1861 in Miedzyn
Hulda Mathilde - born on 28 Jun 1862 in Klein Wilczak
Emil Gustav - born on 8 Dec 1865, died on 4 May 1870 in Klein Wilczak
Julius Rudolf - born on 17 Sep 1870, died on 30 Sep 1870 in Klein Wilczak
Hedwig Maria Emma - born on 3 Feb 1873 in Klein Wilczak

In 1884, when Ernst and Louise were already in their early 50's, the Hoefts made the decision to emigrate to the United States in search of a better life for their family. Ernst and daughter Hulda made the journey first - sailing aboard the SS America from Breman, and arriving in Baltimore, Maryland on 4 April 1884. They eventually made their way on to Wisconsin. On October 31 of that same year, wife Louise and daughters Bertha and Hedwig followed, aboard the SS Hohenstaufen, also arriving in Baltimore, Maryland. As Bertha was already married at this time, the 3 ladies were accompanied by Bertha's husband Carl (Charles) Kienitz and their 3 children (Theodore, Amanda and Hulda).

The Hoefts lived for a number of years in the town of Caledonia, Wisconsin, but later moved to the city of Neenah. Ernst died on 10 May 1917 - just one month shy of his 84th birthday. His wife Louise died in 1924 at the age of 92.
