British when in possession of the city as a hospital.
In 1953, the Third Presbyterian Church merged with Holland-Scots Presbyterian Church to become the Third and Scots Presbyterian Church. The Holland-Scots congregation was the result of the mergers of seven earlier congregations, beginning with Scots Presbyterian Church .In 1959, Third and Scots church merged with Mariners' Presbyterian Church to become the Third, Scots, and Mariners Presbyterian Church. Third, Scots, and Mariners' Presbyterian Church continues as an active congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
The churchyard is distinctive for having the graves of more than 200 Revolutionary War veterans, plus the remains of other patriots and notable Americans. This small graveyard is filled with the bodies of more than 3,000 people. Most of them were buried between the time of the church's founding in 1764 and just after the end of the Civil War in 1865.
The churchyard contains the relocated remains of several other congregations whose histories intersected with that of "Old Pine." In 1848, the First Presbyterian Church reinterred 900 of the bodies from its Bank Street Burial Ground. Several tombstones from that cemetery remain propped up on the western wall of the Old Pine Street burial ground while others are build into a wall nearby. In 2007, the remains of Reverend Stephen Gloucester, his wife Ann, and Reverend Benjamin F. Templeton of the Lombard Street Central Presbyterian Church, were removed there from their former place of entombment in 2007.
