The spelling of Center or Centre. The Center Monthly Meeting has been spelled Center by Clinton County property deeds, Center by the name of the road where it is located, Center by all of the Monthly Meetings that make a reference to Center MM, Center by the "Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy" and the written records from Center MM. Center had four categories for record keeping, Men's Minutes, Women's Minutes, Removal records and Birth & Death records. These records are contained in several volumes that are all titled Center except the birth and death records; This volume was spelled Centre.
In recognition of the practices of The Society of Friends, they did not use grave markers until the early to mid 1800's and varied by location. They also did not use a name of the month like May, but rather the number, 5 for May.
In 1828 the Hicksite separation divided the monthly meeting into two branches. The Orthodox branch appear, to have had the larger membership and to have retained the record books of the original meeting. The Hicksite branch was "laid down" (discontinued) in 1864. The Orthodox branch was "laid down" in 1921.
In 1974 The Wilmington Yearly Meeting transferred the Center Friends Burial Ground to the Clinton County Historical Society. Then in 1998 the Center FBG was transferred to the Trustees of Union Township, Clinton Co., OH. In 2012, the official Center FBG map was updated and approved by the Union Township Trustees.
Many members of Center MM were living in other near by areas. Many of these remote members death dates and burial locations were in New Hope FBG and Caesars Creek FBG, the links below are for quick access to those two Friends Burial Grounds.
