But then disaster happened, many people departed and moved to bigger cities, but some had put down roots in Fort Payne and stayed on. With the loss if much of its industry, its population and its income, the town went into decline. The grand hotel burned and was replaced by a shopping center. Many of the fine homes were allowed to deteriorate as was Woodland Cemetery.
Landmarks of DeKalb County was instrumental in restoring and trying to revitalize the rehabilitation efforts to preserve Woodland Cemetery and was successful at the time.
As of May 15, 2009 after my visit to Fort Payne, the cemetery has once again been vandalized. Tombstones have been broken and turned over. This once planned attractive place for the living, and peaceful place for the dead, seems to be anything but?
