One of many cemeteries along Liesenstrasse in the center of Berlin. This protestant cemetery belongs to the Berlin Cathedral in the center of former East-Berlin. The cemetery was first opened in 1830 and is only 1 hectare in size. In 1961 the East German army flattened large parts of the cemetery to make room for the wall, which was to divide the city for 29 years. Many historic grave sites were destroyed and lost forever. The almost 100-yr-old chapel was renovated in 1992. When the Berlin Cathedral was restaured and received a new cross on its dome, the old cross was moved to this cemetery, where it now stands.
Large parts of this cemetery are still in need of restaurations, many stones have toppled and the inscriptions are hard to read.
The congregation had opened a second cemetery in 1870, called Evangelischer Domfriedhof II at the MΓΌllerstraΓe in Berlin-Wedding.
There is the Catholic cemetery of the St.-Hedwig-Cathedral just down the street (Alter Domfriedhof St. Hedwig).
Please note that the graves in Germany are not perpetual. After a certain period of repose (20-30 years) the graves are being leveled and re-used. There is no toxic embalming being done in Germany, so the coffin and the corpse have decomposed naturally. If the family of the deceased decides to purchase another period the duration can be extended by another 30 years. War Graves are considered memorials and are kept up by the owner of the cemetery. Those are kept forever.
