Add PhotosThe Saint John Street Methodist Episcopal Church was founded in 1817. The congregation purchased a lot of land on Pitt Street (later Saint John Street, now American Street), between George and Beaver Streets (now Wildey Street). There, by 1823, they had established "a plain neat brick building of sufficient size, situated on the west side of Pitt Street, on which it fronts with a cemetery adjoining," according to a Philadelphia guidebook.
The congregation grew rapidly, and soon needed additional land to supplement the churchyard burial ground. In 1828, they established a new burial ground on a lot between Delaware Seventh and Perth Streets, between Parrish and Poplar Streets, to supplement the churchyard; in 1842, the church purchased the Rising Sun Burial Ground at sheriff's sale, as their own burial ground had become a nuisance to the neighborhood.
In 1849, the church purchased a lot west of its original home, at what is now 1028 North Third Street, and constructed a new and expansive church there. They removed burials from this old churchyard to Rising Sun about the year 1867 and was compete by the time the church sold its original home in 1869. Burials at Rising Sun were finally removed to Oakland Cemetery at the end of the 19th century.
The congregation remained in its Third Street home until 1999.
