Add PhotosOn the 10th of September, 1817, 76 members of the Second Baptist Church were dismissed from that church to form their own congregation. They were constituted as the "New Market Street Baptist Church, in the Northern Liberties of Philadelphia." Just one month after the constitution of the church, on October 11th, the corner stone of their new meetinghouse was laid. By the 27th of December the building was in readiness for public worship, and on the first day of January the edifice, 60 feet by 54, was dedicated to the worship of God, and a burial ground laid out alongside.
In 1853, the congregation changed its name to the Fourth Baptist Church, and within a year relocated to Fifth and Buttonwood Streets. The burial ground was removed around the same time.
Today the site sits under the Delaware Expressway, Interstate 95, sits atop the site.
