Father of abolitionist Calvin Fairbank, who was imprisoned 1845-1849 in Kentucky for freeing slaves. Petitioning Kentucky Governor John J. Crittenden for his son's release, Chester contracted cholera, died in Lexington and was buried there. Calvin was pardoned in August, 1849. Returning to Kentucky in 1851 to retrieve his father's body, Calvin was again arrested for anti-slavery activities and was imprisoned from 1852 until 1864. At some point, Chester's body was returned to New York and reburied. Chester married Betsey Abbott January 1, 1810, in Stockbridge, Vermont. They had ten children. Although some sources show Chester as having been born in Swanzey, New Hampshire, Calvin states in his memoirs that his father was born in Swansea, Massachusetts.
